DevOps

The practice of getting code from a developer's laptop to real users, smoothly.

The simple version

DevOps is the practice of automating how software gets built, tested, and released, so new code can go live quickly and reliably instead of through a slow, manual, error-prone process. It blends development ("dev") and operations ("ops") into one smooth pipeline.

For example

Instead of an engineer manually copying files to a server at midnight and hoping nothing breaks, a DevOps setup runs automatic tests on new code, and if everything passes, releases it to users on its own — often while everyone's asleep.

Go deeper

A lot of DevOps work centers on "CI/CD" pipelines (continuous integration / continuous deployment) — the automated system that tests and ships code. Companies invest heavily here because a slow or shaky release process quietly slows down every team that depends on it.

Why it matters

Even if you never write code yourself, DevOps affects how fast a company can fix bugs, ship features, and respond to problems — which affects how competitive and reliable the whole product feels to users.
