Product-Market Fit
The moment a product finally solves a problem people actually pay for.
The simple version
Product-market fit is the point where a product finally solves a real problem well enough that people want it, use it, and keep coming back — instead of trying it once and forgetting about it. Before that point, a startup is usually still guessing at what to build.
For example
A startup might spend a year with a product nobody really needs, growth stuck. Then they change direction, and suddenly people are signing up, sharing it with friends, and getting upset if it goes down — that shift is what finding product-market fit looks like.
Go deeper
Product-market fit isn't a one-time achievement — it can fade if a market changes or competitors catch up, so teams keep watching signals like usage, retention, and how upset users would be if the product disappeared (a real metric some teams track).
Why it matters
Almost everything else in a startup — hiring, fundraising, marketing — becomes far easier after product-market fit, and painfully hard before it. It's one of the most-talked-about ideas in the startup world for good reason.
